Use of cell-phones in the classroom

We all know that nowadays technology has taken a central place in our lifes, and that the posibilities that emerges in every aspect increases everyday. That is the case with education, particularly at schools and the polemic about the using of cell phones in classrooms. There are plenty of positions, and the focus of the discussion is between those who approve the use of these devices, claiming that it would make the teaching and learning a more dinamic process, and those who think that it contributes to the student's deconcentration. In this essay we will explore both ways to approach the discussion.

The use of cellphone and other technology devices in the classrooom has a number of advantages. In this sense, increasing the dynamism in the teaching and learning of the students through the use of technological plataforms, can favor the participation of them in classes because applications, games and specific websites related to the topic of study can motivate boys and girls to learn more and to apply the acquired knowledge. Also, the use of these new methods favors the diversification of information, mainly because through a single click it is possible to have access to numerous sources on the topic of study, wich would not be possible if we refer to traditional teaching methods focused on the bibliografhic search through physical texts that turn this activity into a slower and more cumbersome process.

On the other hand, some people believe that the use of cell phones and technologies can increase the deconcentration of students during school hours, mainly because they would stop paying attention in those moments where it is necessary to listen to the teacher, preferring to use the cell phone to chat, listen to music or watch videos. This situation occurs because access to these devices would cease to be solely for use in learning, breaking the boundaries between what is beneficial for the students and what becomes a hindrance by the fact of deconcentration. To the above is added that the use of electronic devices could even motivate cyber bullyng cases between the students, where the bullies not only realize what happens to the victims during the class, but also in external aspects, making the situation even more difficult to handle.

Finally, as synthesis and  to conclude this essay, I can say that we need an evaluation considering points for and against the use of cell phones in classrooms. In this sense, is good to know both sides of the polemic, things that could be benefit and things that could represent a problem not just for students, but for teachers and parents also. In this way, it is necessary to find the balance in the use of technological devices, because if it is not restricted at the right time this can have more harm than good. On the other hand, if the balance is achieved, the cell phone can function as a tool with respect to the academic performance of the students.
